To the Editor of The Herald,
On behalf of SGA, we would like to commend everyone who has voiced their opinions and concerns, positively or negatively, about our recent passed resolution. It is great that we have a campus that takes a proactive voice in the issues that will affect their daily lives, and not just let the governing body do things that wouldn't benefit students.
We would just like to share with the campus population some of the debate rhetoric and conversation that arose when the resolution was discussed.
First, The Herald staff and Dr. Saunders are right; we are collegiate students and should be treated as adults.
Accordingly, the resolution was not made with the intentions of forcing students to study. Rather, it was brought forth with the idea that we would protect the right of students who would like to use the computers to study. SGA is never in the business of controlling students' personal lives or decisions unless it infringes upon another student's right. So if a student doesn't study, and stays on the computer the whole night watching videos, that's fine, just as long as it's not taking away another student's right to use that computer for academic purposes.
Another point that was mentioned was that some professors use these Web sites for academic use or networking with classmates. While that is true, the majority of usage is for non-academic purposes. There was no way to screen usage for the small percentage of students who use it for academic purposes, so it was not to be used all together. All ASU students have a student e-mail account, and can use the same computers they would use to access Facebook, to e-mail classmates while taking advantage of a great service that the university offers. Not to be ignored, there is always the first floor computer lab, where students can gain access to any Web sites.
SGA always welcomes feedback. We encourage students to come to our bi-weekly senate meetings, held on Tuesdays. We would be delighted to hear your opinions.
Best regards,
Ryan Beaird, SGA President
Quan Poole, SGA Vice-President
