Cayla Fielder has proved to be a vital asset to the Red Wolves volleyball team.

At the beginning of the season she was named to the 2009 All-Sun Belt Conference Preseason Volleyball Team.

Aside from being the only sophomore named to the team she was also awarded freshman of the year by the Sun Belt Conference after the 2008 season. Fielder saw play in 33 games as a true freshman. She made 103 blocks on the year and was second on the team with 291 kills, averaging 2.47 kills per set.

She also posted a hitting percentage of .363 at the end of regular season play to rank fourth in the Sun Belt and 36th nationally. Fielder ended the season with a .356 hitting percentage that ranks sixth in the ASU record book.

This year, nothing has slowed Fielder down. At the Memphis Invitational, she completed a career high of 10 blocks in the first match against South East Missouri. Then, in the second game, of the match Fielder added 14 kills and nine blocks against Evansville. She also added 34 kills and 24 blocks to the weekend's games.

The ASU Classic gave Fielder the opportunity to surpass her previous record of eight blocks at the Memphis Invitational. Fielder was responsible for more than 50 percent of the 46 blocks on the weekend and also averaged 2.83 kills per set. She added another 12 kills and added four blocks against the Huskies of Houston Baptist, in which she was also named the MVP.

Consistency could sum up her overall play in each game because the following game against UT Martin added 11 kills and four blocks. Against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Fielder led the Red Wolves with 18 kills and seven blocks, hitting a solid .531.

As the season continues on, so does the middle blocker's accomplishments. Fielder has recorded a league-best 8 total blocks - 1.45 per set - along with 111 kills and a .366 hitting percentage. She was also named Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Player of the Week twice in a row.

A business management major, Fielder, a Jonesboro native and graduate of Westside High School, said she "keeps her head in the game and doesn't try to get over pumped for a game". She also said she "wasn't even aware of the records that she breaks and isn't at all concerned with them."

Fielder believes on concentrating on the game and taking care of her responsibility on the hard wood. In volleyball, she said her "goal is to be All-American."
