10 Preparing Dinner

If you don't already do this one, I really recommend it. It is a great way to spend some time with your family and help make the magic of Thanksgiving happen. Even if you are not the best cook in the world, just help peel potatoes or chop onions. Anything helps and it is a great experience to be a part of and a great way to enjoy your favorite people.

9 Making Crafts

I actually do not just mean this for small children. Even if your family members all are above the age of fifteen, this can be a great tradition. Just get together some construction paper, markers, popsicle sticks and cotton balls. This sounds silly, but if you ask me, it gets more fun with age. Try making hand turkeys in light of the holiday. It becomes a great creative experience and a nice break from using your hands to write papers or do projects.

8 Watching the parade

Each year, my mom and I wake up early and watch the entire parade on ABC. It changes a little each year, but the sentiment is the same. Even if you don't like cheesy musicals and floats, try turning this on in the background as your family begins their Thanksgiving Day. Maybe it will become your favorite part of the holiday, too.

7 Playing games

This is an old tradition in my family. I highly recommend it for yours. Each year, we buy a new game to enjoy. It can be a card game, a board game, etc. We open it up and play after we eat the big meal on Thanksgiving. Then we have a new game for the rest of the year to have fun with together until the next holiday roles around. It is a great way to have fun and bond for the special time of year.

6 Telling stories

This is a great festivity for a college student to bring to their family. Whether it is while eating or just over the break, just catch up with your loved ones. Chances are that within the busy semester, you have gotten behind on what has been going on with your friends and family and they would probably like to hear more detail on your life here at school. It is also a perfect way to break the ice and awkwardness of being apart for so long.
