Our View: Campus cleaning staff keeps us going

Issue date: 11/19/09 Section: Opinion
There is more to ASU than just students and faculty. The staff members that take care of the "little" things that make our lives easier deserve some appreciation too.
When freshmen move into the residence halls, there is someone there to make sure dorm halls feel a little more like home. We shouldn't ignore them just because they do "the dirty work" around campus.
Our windows are clean and trash is taken out and without these small tasks our campus would look terrible. These people make sure that these things are done in a timely manner so that we can do what we came here to do: learn.
We should all take the time to speak to the ones cleaning tables in the Union or mopping the floor. Learn their names and be friendly.
Chances are that they have an interesting story to tell and will appreciate you taking the time to ask.
We shouldn't look down on these people, but be thankful for their services. They deserve respect for what they do.
Just because we know someone will clean it up, there is no reason for us to forget the simple tasks that we were taught at home. Be courteous and clean up your own mess; there is no sense in making their job harder.
These people work really hard to take care of the "behind the scenes" work that makes our life easier. The least we can do is acknowledge them.
