Burning Waco, founded in the summer of 2008, consists of Joshua Neeley, lead vocals; Brett Walzer, lead guitar and vocals; Kris Hammons, rhythm guitar; Scott Thorn, bass guitar; and Shaun Kirby, drums.
"Take a little Silver Chair, Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers and a little Incubus, grind it in a pot and you've got us," said Kirby, a fall 2009 ASU interdisciplinary studies graduate.
The band is currently recording their first album titled "Making Me the Enemy" which will feature 11 original songs.
The band's songwriting is considered to be "a collaborative effort," but with Neeley and Thorn primarily producing the lyrics.
"Once we have something written everyone else gets together and starts adding new things to it," Neeley said.
The album will include "It's Alright," a song that Neeley was writing at the time his cousin passed away in 2008.
"I dedicated that song to her," he said.
Kirby considers this song to be the "deepest song" featured on the album.
Burning Waco has already recorded three songs and is planning to complete the bass and drum sections of multiple songs at their next recording session in Southaven, Miss. Their CD is scheduled for completion in early summer.
"If I could play music for the rest of my life and get paid for it, that would be awesome," Kirby said.
Burning Waco has performed at several locations in Northeast Arkansas, including Sidelines Bar and Grill in Trumann, Dave's Dawg House in Paragould and The Mallard and Brickhouse Grill in Jonesboro, but is looking to reach larger cities as well.
"Stage-wise, venue-wise, it doesn't matter to me as long as we have a crowd to interact with, a crowd that is there to have fun," Neeley said. "It is ten times more fun when everyone else is having fun."
Burning Waco began as a 90s cover band with Kirby, former drummer for Further Down, leading the way. He and Walzer got in touch with Neeley through a friend, and then recruited Thorn, a former member of Delay the Day, another local band.
Hammons, formerly a member of Save Haven, joined Burning Waco in October of 2009, freeing Neeley from rhythm guitar, and completing the band.
"We all get along really well and everyone is super talented," Hammons said. "We work really well together."
The friendship within the band provides for a comfortable atmosphere that Neeley feels is very important.
"We are all really good friends. I have been in musical activities in the past that makes it hard to work together because you are not social together," Neeley said. "We are like a little family."

Burning Waco's next live show is scheduled at 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26 at Dave's Dawg House in Paragould.
