The month of March was named "Women's History Month" in 1987 by the U.S. Congress. This month is a chance for ASU students, faculty and staff to recognize how far women have come and to realize we can still do more to empower mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, etc.

This month is a chance for women and men to learn a little and to participate in activities celebrating an area of history that went widely unrecognized until 1970, according to www.infoplease.com.

Because of strong women throughout history, sex is no longer a factor in deciding whom is allowed to influence this country's direction. Women now have the freedom of choice, the freedom to vote and the freedom to pursue a variety of careers.

Still, there is a lot of ground that needs to be covered regarding the perception of women who make choices based on opportunity available to them- like raising a family. . This country saw a horrendous display of sexism concerning the involvement of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin in the 2008 Presidential Election campaigns.

Several pictures of Clinton with photo-shopped devil horns, including one posted by Reuters, according to www.slate.com, were in circulation during her presidential campaign.

According to www.politco.com, the news media hounded Palin with questions of whether she was neglecting her family in pursuit of her political aspirations.

According to www.thisnation.com, there are currently 357 men and 78 women in the House. In the Senate, there are 18 women and 82 men. These ratios do not accurately reflect the composition of the United States, as they should.

So, this month, remember the extraordinary things women have accomplished and remember that their goal of equality has not quite yet been met.
