Obama plans to modify education law

President Obama is planning to overhaul the current No Child Left Behind law on Monday.

The law is currently one of the signature laws left by the Bush administration.

"Under these guidelines, schools that achieve excellence or show real progress will be rewarded, and local districts will be encouraged to commit to change in schools that are clearly letting their students down," Obama said.

Under the "New Blueprint for Reform," focus will be shifted from singling out failing schools to foster a "race to the top."

It supports the expansion of public charter schools and calls for giving states and school districts additional flexibility in how they spend federal dollars.

The Obama administration's $50 billion proposed education budget adds $3 billion in funding to help schools meet these revised goals, with the possibility of an additional $1 billion if the overhaul plan passes Congress.

Arkansas mother accused of killing children

A woman from Taylor Southwest of Magnolia has been charged with two counts of capital murder in the deaths of her two children last year.

Columbia County Deputy Prosecutor David Butler said the charges accuse Dawn Marie Wines of suffocating her two children.

Wines is currently being held in New Orleans after being arrested at a residence in Luling,

Although Wines has waived extradtion, deputies are making arrangements to return her to Columbia County, where she'll make her first appearance.

No bond has been set due to the "severity of the crimes" according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
